Description
The module aims to introduce students to some of the essential aspects of culture and society of China. Students will be familiarised with a range of everyday situations requiring the use of specified linguistic skills. Students will be guided in the development of a range of language learning strategies and transferable skills, such as independent learning.

Learning Outcomes
1. Identify economic, social and cultural similarities and differences between Ireland and China.
2. Demonstrate listening skills by showing understanding of phrases and simple messages in everyday contexts.
3. Extract information from a variety of basic texts.
4. Employ effective communication skills in a range of social situations.
5. Produce short texts, for example personal emails, and write short basic description of events, activities and personal experiences.
6. Translate simple sentences from Chinese into English, and vice versa.

Reading Skills.
A variety of texts on topics such as family, everyday life, and nature will be read, analysed and discussed in a group setting..

Listening Skills.
A variety of conversations will be listened to, analysed and repeated..

Writing Skills.
Students will write short texts on given topics by using at least 200 Chinese characters..

Oral Skills.
Students will participate actively in interactive classroom sessions, implement new grammatical structures and speak freely on a given subject..

Role Play.
A variety of everyday situations will be acted out and discussed in class..
