Description
This module aims to describe and analyse essential aspects of Chinese history and contemporary Chinese society, with reference to the theoretical and practical knowledge in Chinese business community. It provides an insight into the daily customs and manners of the Chinese, and the way in which these cultural expressions reflect deeper cultural values of Chinese society. It also prepares students for their year in China, in terms of practical information, cultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence.

Learning Outcomes
1. To identify key cultural issues and be able to cope with cross-cultural situations.
2. To describe essential aspects of Chinese contemporary society as well as Chinese history.
3. To demonstrate familiarity with common customs and the way in which these reflect core cultural values.
4. To distinguish the main cultural differences between Ireland and China.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Lectures.
A brief introduction to Chinese geography, language, history and religion. The 'face' in Chinese culture. The 'culture shock' experienced by Western visitors in China..

Audio/Visual Presentations.
Audio/visual materials, including Chinese films and TV programmes, will be used to demonstrate and understand Chinese culture..

Seminars.
In addition to lectures, a series of seminars will discuss the topics introduced by the lecturer in order to critically analyse the cross-cultural issues and deepen the understanding of core values of Chinese culture..
