Description
This module aims to facilitate oral and written language skills in Chinese at a level corresponding to level B1 of Common European Framework. Specifically, it aims to help students: understand and locate key information from texts and conversations related to daily and social life, or the workplace; communicate with others and describe daily activities; write short passages to convey adequate information. It also consolidates the acquisition of basic Chinese characters and words acquired previously. Students are expected to learn up to 350 characters and 1,000 words related to society, daily life, workplace and campus life. The module prepares the students with necessary communication skills to allow them to engage in academic activities in the course of the year abroad in China.

Learning Outcomes
1. Communicate with others and express personal opinions with clarity on general topics in social activities.
2. Read non-specialist texts in Chinese, comprehend the main ideas and locate key information.
3. Write essays on general social issues by using new Chinese characters and words, as well as those acquired previously.
4. Understand dialogues and speeches closely related to work place and social activities, identify the main points and key information of statements or arguments.
5. Identify and apply grammatical structures correctly in speaking and in written texts.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Reading Skills.
A variety of authentic texts on different topics will be read, analysed and discussed in a group setting. Consolidation of characters and words acquired previously and acquisition of additional new characters and words..

Listening Skills.
A variety of authentic conversations of more formal registers of spoken Chinese will be listened to, analysed and repeated in class..

Writing Skills.
Students will write short texts, creative and more formal, on given topics and current affairs. They will develop their range and active application of more advanced grammatical structures..

Speaking Skills.
Students will actively participate in simple discussions in class. They will express personal opinions, make suggestions and give instructions with clarity..

Preparation for study abroad.
Students will reflect on cultural differences, be familiarised with both linguistic and non-linguistic means of communication, and with how social structure and interpersonal relationships are manifested in the Chinese language..
