The module aims to introduce students to selected perspectives in the study of Chinese culture, which will enhance their understanding of Chinese culture and Chinese people’s way of life and belief through historical analysis, and theoretical enquiries into the key aspects of China’s interaction and exchange with the West, both about its past and present, in an interdisciplinary manner. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

1. Investigate and analyse key concepts for understanding the diversity and plurality of Chinese culture. 2. Critically review the role of Chinese culture plays in the various forms of Chinese life such as language, literature, thought and value, etc. 3. Identify the broad changes and the transformation in China and the world in order to understand how these come to influence the Chinese ways of life. 4. Lead an advanced discussion on the topic in the target language. 5. Demonstrate research capabilities in the selected topic in the target language. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Indicative Content and Learning Activities | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Lectures. The course will be structured around the following topics in an interactive seminar style: the relationship between Chinese culture and language; Chinese society and economics; the role of Chinese culture plays in love, sex and marriage; the Sino-Western exchanges and varied types of images of the West in China; domestic migration and oversea Chinese.. Audio/Visual Presentations. Audio/visual materials, including selected Chinese films and TV programmes, will be used and analysed.. Seminars. In addition to the lectures, a series of seminars will provide the opportunities to students to discuss the selected topics and deepen the understanding of Chinese culture.. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
