Description
This module aims to facilitate oral and written language skills in Chinese at a level corresponding to level B2 of Common European Framework. The module aims to consolidate proficiency in spoken and written Chinese in order to enable students to function through Chinese at a high level in professional, business and social situations. Students will be able to recognise and respond appropriately to linguistic nuances in a range of realistic business and social situations. The module will increase the depth and practical value of students’ knowledge of Chinese culture and society and the Chinese economy.

Learning Outcomes
1. Recognise and respond to linguistic nuances in a variety of different social situations.
2. Display competence in writing Chinese for specific purposes.
3. Demonstrate competence in reading various kinds of authentic texts (literary, etc.) on a wide range issues.
4. Communicate with a high degree of fluency and accuracy in discussion and debate covering a considerable range of contexts.
5. Write complex Chinese texts on a variety of themes.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Reading.
Students will be introduced to advanced reading materials, such as literary texts in Chinese, to develop their critical reading abilities, and to support their acquisition of self-sustaining knowledge of Chinese current affairs. Independent reading will be supported, and direction on suitable contemporary texts will be provided..

Writing.
Students will demonstrate competence in writing essays on their specialized areas of interest..

Oral and Aural Skills.
Students will practise their oral and aural skills through debate, discussion and role-play in the classroom. Students will learn structures and registers appropriate to different social situations and contexts in both oral and written forms. Students will be exposed to a variety of audio and visual materials and develop knowledge of current Chinese issues raised in the materials..
