Description
This module introduces concepts in the operational principles of modern communication systems and networks. Topics in the science of electronics are also presented.

Learning Outcomes
1. Classify and explain various types of telecommunications services and networks
2. Discuss semiconductor devices used in telecommunications networks
3. Calculate electrical values for devices used in telecommunications such as diodes, transistors and amplifiers
4. Contrast primary electro-optical devices as used in telecommunications systems
5. Demonstrate the relationships between bandwidth, noise and capacity
6. Recognise the nature of information, coding and flow control for speed and efficiency
7. Describe essential signal processing functions of a telecommunications system
8. Perform signal conditioning/ encoding operations for telecommunications systems operation
9. Differentiate between transmission media and interfaces
10. Illustrate basic network concepts and issues
