A module which aims to raise students' awareness of the variety of experiences people have with Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and to situate understanding of ICTs in the social and cultural contexts in which they are experienced and used. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

1. Explain ICT use and experience from socio-cultural and ecological perspectives. 2. Evaluate the relationship between ICTs and organizational processes such as communicating, coordinating activities, sustaining working relationships, and making decisions. 3. Apply knowledge of social and organizational processes to the design and evaluation of ICTs. 4. Carry out empirical research on peoples experiences with information and communication technology. 5. Assess the evidence on peoples experience with a variety of information and communication technologies (e.g. mobile phones, internet, social networking). 6. Evaluate how ICTs mediate a variety of cultural practices (e.g. work, education, making and sustaining friendship, play). 7. Demonstrate teamworking skills and abilities such as: collaboration, coordination, communication, negotiation, project management. 8. THE CULTURES OF TECHNOLOGY (HSA). From human factors to cultures: arguing that technology is a cultural as well as a technical and individual concern. For example it could take the analysis of error from Cognitive Ergonomics from individualistic analyses of human error to organisational analyses of safety – safetyculture, accountability, responsibility, etc and the role of ICT in this culture./ Interrelationships between ICT and organising: introducing ICT into aculture that is resistant e.g. hospitals; will ICTs change the ways in whichwe think about organising, management, working etc./ Looking at ICTs as technologies, tools, media for relating, cultures, etc/ Computer mediated communication: examples of systems and studies ofexperiences using them./ Computer Supported Cooperative Work: the role of technology insupporting work practices, experiences, cultures – again examples ofsome systems and experiences of use/ Computer Supported Learning: the role of technology in supportinglearning practices, experiences, cultures – examples of some systems andexperiences of use/ E-commerce: experiences of Internet branding, shopping, etc./ Relationships: making and sustaining friendships through ICT/ ICT and control: management, democracy, privacy, trust, crime et. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
