Description

Contemporary themes, including modernism and post-modernism in the Irish and international context are analysed in the context of key texts drawn from poetry, drama, fiction and film. Students also produce a dissertation as part of this module.

Learning Outcomes

1. Critically reflect upon the differences between modernism and postmodernism
2. Appraise, critically, the post-modernist features of British, Irish and American poetry
3. Critically analyse the characteristics of the post-modern novel
4. Apply postmodernist literary theory to Irish and international fiction
5. Critically evaluate the influence that the Second World War had upon post-modern literature
6. Critically reflect upon the differences between Genre and Auteur theories of film criticism
7. Critically appraise the ways in which film communicates meaning to the viewer
8. Carry out an original dissertation which complies with professional standards and conventions
