This module will review the cumulative effect of the innovations and developments in technology and information systems which, together with parallel changes in society, have given rise to the ‘digital economy’. The module will provide participants with an understanding of how the frameworks and theories of networks, information, and information systems are used effectively in business to underline the business model and provide a basis for competitive advantage. Finally, the module will provide participants with an understanding of how effective management of information systems can enable the generation of business value to an organisation | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

1. Describe and discuss the context, evolution, and characteristics of the networked digital economy 2. Explain and assess strategies for information and network markets including strategies for network effects and information goods 3. Compare and contrast different strategic perspectives to examine how information systems can contribute to strategic advantage 4. Evaluate the role of information systems and associated / complimentary investments in driving business value in organisations 5. Critically assess and compare different approaches to appraising and justifying proposals for information systems to deliver business value 6. Critically assess the information systems management of an organisation relative to the state of the art in areas such as: business-IT alignment; IT governance; portfolio management; IT service management; IS development and sourcing practices; and risk assessment, business continuity, and security management; 7. Introduction & Context. The development and characteristics of the Digital Economy. Organisations and Management in the Digital Economy. Eras in the development of Information Systems, and associated innovation in hardware, software, networks, and management. The Digital World is changing how business is done. Impact of developments in the digital economy on business structures, processes, models and interfaces. The evolving role of IT. Functions and characteristics of major information systems - Transaction Procesing Systems, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Supply Chain Management, Enterprise Resource Planning; Data warehouses, and Decision Support Systems. Strategic Perspectives. Frameworks for internal and external analysis. Planning, Appraisal, and Business-IT alignment. Best practice in relation to systems of plans and investment appraisal for information systems, and the alignment of the information sytems with the organisation. Sourcing of information systems. Insourcing, outsourcing, and backsourcing - whether, how, risks & benefits, and outcomes.. Information Systems Management.
