DCU has several specialised research centres and hosts others that involve collaborations with other Higher Education Institutions and industry. The research centres generally fall into the scope of DCU's Research and Enterprise Hubs. Further information can be found from the web links below.

Information and Communications Technology

  • National Centre for Plasma Science and Technology –   a multidisciplinary Irish National Research Centre on plasma-related research.
  • Rince Institute -an Irish national research institute focussed on innovation in engineering technologies.
  • Centre for Next Generation Localisation – CNGL is a collaborative academia-industry research centre dedicated to delivering disruptive innovations in digital intelligent content, and to revolutionising the global content value chain for enterprises, communities and individuals.
  • INSIGHT – a €75M centre funded by Science Foundation Ireland and Industry partners, developing a new generation of data analytics technologies.
  • Irish Centre for Cloud Computing and Commerce (IC4) – a  centre of excellence for innovation and applied research, that accelerates the development and adoption of Cloud technology and show cases Ireland's capabilities in this field.
  • Centre for Advancement of Science Teaching and Learning – CASTeL research is focussed on 'the classroom and the lab' – on enhancing the impact of the full spectrum of teaching, learning and assessment activities in mathematics and science.
  • Scientific Computing and Complex Systems Modelling – SCI-SYM is a centre of excellence for researchers working in high performance computing (HPC) applied to computational and mathematical models for complex systems in engineering, natural and applied sciences.

Biotechnology, healthcare and pharmaceuticals

  • Biomedical Diagnostic Institute (BDI) – an academic/industrial/clinical research centre focussed on the development of the next generation of point-of-care biomedical diagnostic devices.
  • National Centre for Sensor Research (NCSR) – a multidisciplinary research facility focused on the science and applications of chemical sensors and biosensors.
  • National Institute for Cellular Biotechnology (NICB) –  a multidisciplinary centre of research in fundamental and applied Cellular Biotechnology, Molecular Cell Biology, Ocular diseases and Biological Chemistry.
  • International Centre for Neurotherapeutics – a  multi-disciplinary centre undertaking research into the fundamental mechanisms of neurotransmitter release  focussed on  developing  novel treatments for  neuronal disorders
  • Molecular Therapeutics for Cancer, Ireland (MTCI) – a Science Foundation Ireland-funded Strategic Research Cluster which aims to discover and develop new anti-cancer drugs.
  • Irish Separation Science Cluster (ISSC) – a Science Foundation Ireland-funded Strategic Research Cluster focussed on expanding  the current boundaries of separation science to provide new solutions to complex problems significant to the entire spectrum of life science industries.
  • National BioPhotonics Imaging Platform – provides a structured research and training framework for Ireland's investment in advanced imaging applied to the Life Sciences.
  • Centre for Preventive Medicine – research centre aimed at preventing or delaying the morbidity and mortality associated with prevalent chronic diseases.

Manufacturing competitiveness

  • National Centre for Plasma Science and Technology –   a multidisciplinary Irish National Research Centre on plasma-related research.

  • National Institute for Digital Learning - The National Institute for Digital Learning (NIDL) aims to be a world leader at the forefront of contemporary theory, research and practice in new transformative models of digital learning.   • Centre for Family Business – The first family business centre of excellence and learning in Ireland, translating leading Irish and International research into best practice, for this generation and future generations of Irish family businesses.
  • Irish Social Sciences Platform – ISSP is an all-island platform of integrated social science research and graduate training focusing on the social, cultural and economic transformations shaping Ireland in the 21st century
  • Centre for International Studies – CIS seeks  to co-ordinate and promote research in international studies and while sited in the School of Law and Government it takes an interdisciplinary approach to research.
  • Centre for translation and Textual Studies  – pursues research in translation and textual studies, applied languages, and related areas.
