SALIS - Research in SALIS

Postgraduate FAQs

Q. I am interested in starting a Ph. D. in SALIS. What should I do?

A. The first step is to look at the list of colleagues, and our research fields. You will see that we are organised in sections: Intercultural Studies (which encompasses the Comparative Literature Team), Language Studies, and Translation Studies:

http://www.dcu.ie/info/staff.php3?query=salis

Each name is a link which leads to our research profiles and biographies.

Then, once you have identified (a) potential relevant supervisor(s), please contact her/him/them along with the current chairperson of the SALIS Research Committee. Your first e-mail, along with your detailed C.V., should include a Letter of Motivation as well as a valid, extended Research Proposal : Working title, Description of project, Context of project within the current state of research and scholarship within the area, Bibliographical information, Relative Significance of the contribution of the proposed research to the scholarship in the area, Proposed methodology...

Once this Research proposal is approved by your potential (co-)supervisor(s) and members of the Research Committee, you can start!

Q. How do I apply?

A. Postgraduate applicants to DCU programmes are made online via the Postgraduate Application Centre (PAC)

http://www.pac.ie/

Q. What will happen while I am studying for my Ph. D.?

A. Most answers (including milestones, supervisors' duties, calendars…) can be found on a document called the SALIS Research Committee Code of Practice :

http://www.dcu.ie/salis/research/cop.shtml

Obviously, feel free to contact the SALIS Chairperson, at anytime, for any issue that might be relevant to you.

Q. I am looking for funding, can you help?

A. Supervisors are encouraged to assist new Research Students in seeking funding from the IRCHSS, as well as from other sources, when they arise. The Chairperson of the SALIS Research Committee has a full list of funding sources more focused on research fields. The Office of the Vice President for Research (Research and Innovation Support) provides a yearly allocation for Conference Travel, and students can seek help with us to answer Faculty Wide Calls for Funding for our registered students.

Q. How do I find my way around D.C.U., around SALIS, around my Research?

A. At the start of each year, the Research Committee, your supervisor(s), the Library, the Faculty of Humanities, and the Research and Innovation Support organise different induction Seminars connected with all the many aspects of academic life, so as to make you feel as welcome as possible.

Q. How do I advertise my Research for the future?

A. There are many ways to do so. You will be encouraged to present your research in an informal platform at our SALIS Research Seminars. The Research and Innovation Support offers all students from the Faculty of Humanities to set up their own Research Support System account (RSS). This is a way to flag your research world-wide (be it oral presentations, posters, publications of all kinds) and to receive further funding information. You will also be encouraged to present papers at relevant established academic conferences.

Q. How do I go about to smooth the administrative side of being a Postgraduate in SALIS and in DCU?

A. You will find here links to different pages from the DCU website. The first page to look at is the Registry webpage:
http://www.dcu.ie/registry/

Once you have read the SALIS Code of Practice, you will find that all forms are on PDF files on this site. Rita McCann <rita.mccann@dcu.ie> from Registry can help.

Q. When does the academic year start, when does it end?

A. Our Academic calendar is to be found at the following webpage:
http://www.dcu.ie/timetables/ac_05_06.shtml

Q. How much is an M.A.? How much is a Ph. D.?

A. You can find updated information on at:
