Clinical Education Centre

Using the CEC – Student Information

The Clinical Education Centre (CEC) provides a controlled environment for you to practice safely in a supportive setting before you enter the real world of healthcare. It is purposely designed to replicate the healthcare setting and facilitates undergraduate and postgraduate students to develop their skills by using a simulated health care setting.

Opening Hours

The Clinical Education Centre is open from 9:00am – 5:00pm Monday – Friday. Arranging to use the C.E.C. at other times requires two weeks advance notice and is at the discretion of the C.E.C. Manager.

To access the C.E.C.

  • You must use your identification card in the swipe system to gain access to the C.E.C. It is important that you do not give this card to another person to access the centre.

Skills Sessions

A number of modules have a clinical skills component as part of the module. Attendance at these skills sessions is compulsory. Information will be provided by your module co-ordinator. These sessions will form part of the semester timetable.

  • In addition the clinical skills nurses will arrange group sessions on a regular basis to supervise students who wish to practise their clinical skills. You will be notified in advance of these times. Attendance is optional. You do not have to wear uniforms for optional skills training sessions but you should dress appropriately.

Dress Code

Full uniform must be worn for OSCE’s and when participating in skills sessions, if it is an observation session then comfortable dress and flat shoes are required. Lockers are provided on the ground floor for you to leave your valuables and bags when attending a clinical skills session.

Audio-Visual (A.V.) Facilities

Clinical skills sessions, OSCEs and simulation may be recorded and you may also record yourself practicing nursing skills. These recordings are valuable as a reflection for you and also as a feedback system for examiners. You will be given an introductory workshop at the start of semester on how to use the equipment. Anybody being recorded should know that they are being recorded. Under no circumstances should you record anyone without their prior knowledge and consent. The use of camera phones or other photographic equipment by students is not allowed.

General Behaviour

Please treat the furniture and equipment with care. Please be vigilant when using the centre and leave it as you found it. Eating and drinking is not allowed in any area of the C.E.C. Please place litter in the bins provided. The black bin bags should be used for all household and uncontaminated waste. There are also yellow plastic bags in the CEC, which are only used for clinical waste. To avoid slips, trips and falls please ensure that all spillages are cleaned up immediately and the area dried or marked with a safety cone.

All mobile phones must be turned off on entering the Clinical Education Centre to prevent interruption / distraction during classes.

Policies / procedures / guidelines

Copies of all of the policy / procedure / guideline documentation mentioned in this information booklet are located at the nurse’s station in ward H119. They are for reference only and should not be taken away.
