The aftermath of genocide in Rwanda
Ambassador Shaharyar M. Khan, former foreign secretary of Pakistan and former UN Secretary Generalís Special Representative to Rwanda 1994-6
Ambassador Khan served as Pakistanís ambassador to India, the United Kingdom, China, the US and France, after which he became Pakistan's Foreign Secretary, holding the post for four years between 1990 and 1994. He was then appointed the UN Secretary Generalís Special Representative to Rwanda where he remained for two years overseeing the United Nations activities in the country, after the genocide. In his retirement, Shaharyar Khan has written a number of books on history and contemporary affairs, including an account of the events in Rwanda. He now lecturers on politics and diplomacy in the prestigious Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Pakistan.
Ambassador Khan is visiting DCU under a research programme funded by the European Commission on peacekeeping and peacemaking in Europe and South Asia.
