Engagement with Civil Society for Poverty Alleviation and Development

News article added on Feb 23 2008

This research was commissioned by the Advisory Board for Irish Aid on Ireland’s engagement with civil society for poverty reduction. The Advisory Board for Irish Aid wanted to know how can Ireland’s Official Development cooperation programme on the one hand, and Civil Society in Ireland and in the South on the other, work together to contribute optimally to poverty reduction and sustainable development? The project sought to place Irish Aid's currnet policy and practice in a comparative context with other donors, to examine the perspectives of irish development NGOs and to analyse the perspectives od Southern Civil society Organisations

The Centre for International Studies in Dublin City University in addressing these questions designed a research programme which was structured around a framework study of existing research in this area, a study of civil society policy in seven comparator donors; a study of the perspectives of Irish Development NGOs; three case studies based on extensive field reseach in Tanzania, Ethiopia and Central America – and a study of the Irish experience of civil society in development and its potential relevence in the Global South.
