The ELP
The DCU European Language Portfolio (ELP), based on a Council of Europe initiative to encourage plurilingualism and multiculturalism, is a document which records the learner's language learning
and intercultural experiences in different contexts, both inside and outside the classroom. The portfolio consists of three main components:
Language Passport
This provides others with an overview of the learner's experience and
abilities in different languages. It records formal qualifications and self-
assessment.
Language Biography
This contains a description of the learner's personal language learning
history, which helps the learner to set and evaluate his/her language learning
aims and objectives and to reflect on his/her language learning and
intercultural experiences.
Dossier of Work
This includes samples of the learner's work in the foreign language(s), which
illustrate his/her language skills, experiences and achievements.
The approach adopted by the ELP encourages the learner to be more reflective in
his/her language learning practice and it fosters learner independence by requiring the learner to
plan and assess his/her own progress through a
lifetime of language learning.
With the ELP, the learner can show examples of his/her personal language work to academic supervisors or employers to demonstrate his/her ability to study and work in the medium of the foreign language and to adapt to a diversity of
cultural environments.
