AFA (Applied French Association) Seminar, Dublin City University 10 May 2003
The aim of the AFA Seminar was to introduce the concept of the ELP to colleagues from various institutions
in Ireland (e.g. DIT, UCG, St. Patrick’s College Drumcondra, Killybegs College of Tourism) and to present the experiences of colleagues who have used the ELP in recent years.
The morning session was presented by Dr Barbara Lazenby-Simpson from the Centre for Language and Communication Studies (CLCS), Trinity College Dublin. Dr. Simpson gave an overview
of the ELP, its principles and purpose, and then presented its applications in different contexts, i.e. CLCS university language learners and IILT (Integrate Ireland Language Teaching)
adult migrant learners. Dr, Simpson concluded her presentation with observations and findings from both domains.
The afternoon session was presented by Veronica Crosbie and Juliette Péchenart from SALIS, DCU. They presented the DCU pilot version of the ELP and reflected on its introduction
on some DCU modules (EFL, French and German). This session was more hands-on, engaging participants with various ELP-related activities, and concluded with a plenary discussion on
the ELP in the context of Third Level foreign language education.

Research Seminar Series. It was entitled: "Have Portfolio, Will Travel: The European Language Portfolio in DCU".
The purpose of the seminar was to introduce staff and postgraduate students in
SALIS to the concept of the ELP and to provide them with a brief overview of its development in Europe to date. The pilot project currently taking place in DCU involving the development and implementation
of a SALIS/DCU version of the ELP was subsequently discussed and the ramifications for teaching in SALIS and beyond were considered.

The Launch of the European Language Portfolio November 2002
|
Dick Roche, TD, Minister of State with responsibility for European Affairs, launched the pilot version of the European Language Portfolio.
The director of this new initiative, Veronica Crosbie of the SALIS, received financial support in the form of a Fellowship in Teaching and Learning early in 2002 to support her plans to set up the portfolio in DCU.
The aim of the portfolio is to assist students to evaluate their own language learning skills which will then allow increased comparability of language qualifications across Europe.

DCU TEACHING AND LEARNING FELLOWSHIP January 2002 - December 2003
In January 2001, Ms. Veronica Crosbie was awarded a DCU Teaching and Learning Fellowship
to support her bid to develop and pilot a version of the European Language Portfolio in the School of Applied Language
and Intercultural Studies over a two- year period.
Fellowship Scheme>>
Two SALIS colleagues, Dr. Jenny Bruen and Ms. Juliette Péchenart, joined the team and by September 2001 they had a SALIS version ready to introduce
to students of English, French and German. Over the course of the academic year, the ELP team piloted the portfolio and research findings were
publicised through DCU research seminars as well as through external workshops and conferences. See other ELP News items for details.
The final phase of the Fellowship included the creation of an on-line version of the ELP, which can be viewed on the student pages of this site. Users
need to subscribe as the site has restricted access. The ELP is also being used by other interested colleagues in SALIS, with the ultimate aim to have
all DCU students using the portfolio as a gateway to lifelong language learning.
