Collins - de Valera Pact

Among the provisions of the Pact are that existing Pro- and Anti- Treaty Dáil representation would provide basis for candidates (i.e. Sinn Fein would put forward a panel of candidates – 68 nominated from the pro-Treaty side and 58 from the anti-Treaty side).  It is greeted with applause in the Dáil and considerable alarm in London.  Officially, the Dáil cabinet justified it in terms of restoring order to allow the election to take place but Griffith's acquiescence was very muted.  It is understood that the Treaty would not be an issue in the forthcoming election.  Details of the Pact document given in Curran and Macardle.
