Library Membership

Library

All DCU staff and students automatically have full membership of the Library. Staff, however, must be registered on the Library system, using  this form
DCU Alumni may avail of a special membership scheme. Students and staff in our linked colleges may also access the Library with their institutional ID card.
Private individuals and members of other academic institutions may apply for membership of the Library under a limited number of schemes.
Students attending other public higher education universities/colleges may access the library (for a day) with a letter of introduction from their own Library. Further details below.

DCU Library External Membership Scheme

Members of the public may apply for external membership of the library. External membership of the library is for personal research purposes only. Acceptance of an application is at the discretion of the Director of Library Services. We regret that we cannot offer external membership to students registered at other Irish academic or educational institutions.
The scheme offers two forms of membership: ‘access only’ or ‘access and borrowing’:

  • Access only membership costs €63 for 6 months and €126 for 12 months. Under this scheme members can access the library’s collections, use the information desk service and avail of the pre-paid photocopying service.
  • Access and Borrowing costs €126 for 6 months and €252 for 12 months. Under this scheme members can also borrow up to 8 items from the Library’s main-lending collection.

Please note:

  • External members may not borrow from the Short Loan Collections on the ground floor

  • Due to licensing agreement regulations, access is only available to selected electronic resources while on-campus

  • External membership of the library is for personal private research only, not for commercial or professional purposes

  • off-campus access to electronic resources is not available to external members

Applying for External membership

Application forms are available from the Issue Desk on the ground floor, or online (pdf). Please complete form online, print, sign and send to ‘Membership, the Issue Desk, DCU Library, Dublin 9’.
Please do not include the membership fee.

If your application is approved (acceptance of an application is at the discretion of the Director of Library Services) you will be informed within a week, and asked to send the appropriate fee. We regret that for the moment we are unable to accept credit card payments.

DCU Alumni membership scheme

Alumni of DCU may take out annual membership of the Library. Details and a link to the application form are here

ALCID Scheme

Students and staff from participating ALCID Libraries may access the Library using their ALCID card and institutional ID card.

SCONUL Access Scheme

SCONUL Access is a reciprocal access scheme, granting borrowing privileges to many types of library users working or studying at participating higher education libraries in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Reciprocal access means that each participating library chooses which types of users to accept under the scheme. Its users are then offered exactly the same level of service by other member libraries. DCU library offers borrowing to visiting staff and research students under the scheme.

Daily Access/Letter of Introduction

Students attending other public higher education universities/colleges may access the library (for a day) with a letter of introduction from their own Library.

  • The letter must be on an original letterhead from the student's own institution's library, and be signed and stamped by library staff
  • The letter must state specifically the material the student wishes to access

Visiting lecturers / academic collaborators

If you are an academic visitor/collaborator to DCU, your host school can arrange visitor access to the Library.
To apply, this form should be completed and stamped by the school, centre or unit, and presented at the Library Reception desk or sent in advance to the Issue desk.
