Using Refworks off campus for the first time

Before you use RefWorks off-campus, you must make a few changes to your web browser:

Access RefWorks off campus

  1. Go to the RefWorks login page. If you are off-campus it will take you to the DCU Library Databases - Off Campus Access page first. Enter your DCU computer username & password and click on Login.
  2. If you get an error message saying there's a problem with the website's security certificate, follow the instructions for Using RefWorks off campus for the first time above.
  3. Next, you will come to the RefWorks login page. Enter your RefWorks username and password and click on Login.

Install Write-N-Cite

  1. Close Microsoft Word.
  2. Log on to your RefWorks account and click onTools > Write-N-Cite and download Write-N-Cite.
  3. Click on the file called WNCInstall that you have saved to your computer and follow the installation instructions.
  4. Select Allow Working Offline if you would like to use this option. Its useful if you don't have a broadband connection or if your laptop isn't always connected - read more about it here.
  5. When you're finished the installation, click on Start > Programs > RefWorks > WNC Proxy Configuration Utility.
  6. Copy and paste in this URL: https://remote.library.dcu.ie/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true
  7. Click on OK.

Accessing Write-N-Cite Off Campus

  1. OpenMicrosoft Word and click on the Write-N-Cite button. If the next page asks you for the RefWorks Group Code, close Write-N-Cite. Click on Start > Programs > RefWorks > WNC Proxy Configuration Utility. Copy and paste in this URL: https://remote.library.dcu.ie/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true
    Click on OK and then open Write-N-Cite again. You only need to to this once.
  2. When you get to the DCU Library Databases - Off Campus Access page, enter your DCU computer username and password and click on Login.
  3. Next, you will come to the RefWorks login page. Enter your RefWorks username and password and click on Login.
