Linking to e-resources via Moodle or the web
Most publishers now provide electronic access to full text articles, mainly through databases. The Library (and IReL) subscribe to the best of these databases and provide online access to thousands of scholarly journal titles across the full range of the University's teaching and research disciplines.
Academic staff can support students by creating direct links from online reading lists or module Moodle pages to individual journal articles or key resources. Students can then access this material on or off-campus.
Which resources can I link to?
All major full text e-journals databases enable direct linking to individual articles.
There are, however, different methods.
Original publishers (e.g. Cambridge, Sage and ScienceDirect) use Digital Object Identifiers
(DOIs) to uniquely identify articles and to help forge permanent, stable links to them.
The DOI is the standard for this purpose and produces the best results. Database services
who do not own their own content, licensing in from original publishers (e.g. EBSCO,
Heinonline, JSTOR and Project Muse), have developed in-house methods for providing
links to articles in their databases. We strongly recommend you use these DOI-based article
links where you can!
How do I link to DOI articles?
Here are the basic steps you will need to take when linking to articles using DOIs.,
The same principles apply to practically all main original online publishers.
- Step 1
Identify the DOI for the article you want to link to. You'll usually find the DOI on the article's record page (the page with bibliographic and abstract details), or even in the full text article itself - Step 2
Copy the "doi" link into your target file, .e.g: doi:10.1016/S0169-023X(03)00046-6 - Step 3
Remove "doi:" from your step 2 doi link.
NB: don't forget to remove the colon and any space between the colon and the string! You should be left with a numerical/letter string, e.g.:
10.1016/S0169-023X(03)00046-6 - Step 4
Insert the following script before the string: https://remote.library.dcu.ie/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/

Linking to 'non-DOI' articles
Aggregators like EBSCO who licence full text articles from original publishers have their own in-house methods for linking to articles. We have produced specific linking instructions for EBSCO*, Heinonline, JSTOR and Project Muse.
* EBSCO databases include
Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, Econlit, Health Source: Nursing/ Academic Edition,
Professional Development Collection, PsycArticles.
