Books and E-books

Most Mechanical Engineering books are located on the second floor of the library. You can find out which books we have by searching the Library Catalogue. It will tell you if we have a book, where it is located, and if it's already on loan to another library user. To find out more about borrowing from the library have a look at these web pages

Quick Guide to books on Mechanical Engineering

Subject Book Shelf Mark
Biomechanics 617.3
Electronics 621.381
Engineering Design 620.0042

E-books

We also have access to a number of e-books. Most of these are on the Library Catalogue.

The library currently provides access to thousands of  e-books. When you search the library catalogue you can refine your search by choosing "E-Books" on the left hand side of the screen. When you click on the link to view the book you may be asked to verify yourself as a registered student by logging in with your computer username and password (Novel login).

Apart from individual titles accessible via the catalogue, we also have searchable collections of e-books. Have a look at our e-books page for a full listing.

All our e-books can be accessed off-campus.

Journals

The A-Z of journals is a listing of all our print and e-journals. It will tell you if the journal you are looking for is available in print here in the library and/or electronically on one of our databases. You can search this list by entering the title of the journal or you can get a list of journals in your chosen subject area by browsing (see below).

Databases

The Library subscribes to many databases which allow you to easily search for journal articles. Some databases also provide references to reports, conference proceedings, theses and even books.
Some databases contain the full-text of the articles others provide you with a citation/abstract only. In the case of citation/abstract databases click on the this will search all our databases to see if the article you require is available.

Below are a selection of databases that are particularly relevant to your subject area. A full list of all our databases is available from the A to Z of databases.

Key Databases

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Full text access to 22 journals published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Compendex (EI Engineering Village)
Compendex is a major interdisciplinary engineering database offering abstracts from 5,000 engineering journals, conference papers and  technical reports. Covers 175 disciplines and major specialities within these broad engineering areas: mechanical, civil, environmental, electrical, materials science, chemical, optics, solid state physics, control, and engineering management. Access to the database is through the Engineering Village interface.

IEEE Xplore
Represents 30% of electrical engineering and computer science literature. IEL provides access to all IEEE journals, transactions, magazines and conference proceedings; IEE journals and conference proceedings; and current IEEE standards. Full-text is available from 1988 and selected content available from 1950.

Scopus
Scopus is one of the largest multi-disciplinary abstracting and indexing databases of research literature and quality web sources. It offers access to over 16,000 titles from more than 4000 international publishers, with abstracts available back to 1966. Citation data is available from 1996. Coverage includes scientific, technical, medical and social sciences literature including, arts and humanities. There are also 23 million patent records from 5 patent offices as well as links to ‘Articles in Press’ from over 3,000 journals.
