GR17 - First Circular
GR17, the 17th International
Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation, takes place in Dublin, Ireland on July
18th 23rd 2004. The conference venue is the RDS Convention Centre.
GR17 is the latest in the series of triennial international conferences held under the auspices of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation. These conferences form the principal international meetings for scientists working in the areas of relativity and gravitation. The subject matter of the conference is all areas of general relativity and gravitation, including Gravitational Waves: Detection and Generation; Relativistic Astrophysics; Cosmology; Strings, Branes and M-Theory; Mathematical Relativity and Quantum Gravity.
2004 promises to be an exceptionally exciting year in General Relativity and Gravitation: the LIGO/VIRGO/GEO/TAMA network of gravitational wave detectors has begun generating scientific results, ushering in the era of gravitational wave astronomy. GR17 will provide the scientific community with one of the earliest opportunities to discuss the first scientific results of this era.
With a view to facilitating the gravitational wave detection community, the dates for GR17 have been co-ordinated with those of the 5th LISA symposium to be held in ESTEC, The Netherlands.
Scientific Programme
The scientific programme will consist of Plenary Lectures to be held during the mornings of the conference and Workshops which will involve parallel sessions of contributed talks and poster sessions. The scientific programme is being arranged by the Scientific Organising Committee which for GR17 is chaired by Curt Cutler of the Albert Einstein Institute, Golm.
The Workshop Chairs will be announced in the next circular. Conference participants will be asked to submit a title and abstract to the Chair and to the Local Organising Committee (LOC) by 19th March 2004. Submissions may be selected for presentation as a short talk or as a poster.

About Dublin
Ireland is an island on the western edge of
Europe, with a population of 3.5 million people. The capital, Dublin, is on the eastern
coast and has a population of just over 1.25 million in the city and surrounding areas.
Since the celebration of its Millennium in 1988, Dublin has undergone extensive redevelopment in the areas of infrastructure and city renewal. The International Financial Services Centre has established Dublin as a major business capital, and the ongoing revitalisation of the river docklands plus the new light rail system will further enhance the city.
Dublin is an extremely popular tourist destination, with a great wealth of historic monuments, wonderful cathedrals and castles, classic Georgian buildings, plus theatres, cafes, restaurants and shopping areas worthy of a European capital. Its small size makes it easy to walk about the city centre, and the large number of parks and gardens (including the Phoenix Park, the largest city park in Europe) and its world-famous pubs adding to the relaxed atmosphere of life in Dublin. The Temple Bar district has become renowned as a ``Latin Quarter", providing a central focus for the arts. With over 50\% of the population under 30 years of age it is a very young and vibrant city, and was the European City of Culture in 1991. Dublin is a warm and friendly city, with the tradition of A Hundred Thousand Welcomes for the visitor.
