The
Local Organising Committee extends a warm invitation to all scientific colleagues to
attend the 17th International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation to be held
in Dublin, Ireland from 18th-23rd July 2004. Registration will open on the afternoon of
Sunday 18th July, with the academic programme commencing on the morning of Monday 19th
July and concluding on the evening of Friday 23rd July. The conference will take place at
the Royal Dublin Society's convention centre (http://www.rds.ie).
For the
convenience of the gravitational wave
detection community, the dates for GR17 have been co-ordinated with those of the 5th LISA
symposium to be held in ESTEC, The Netherlands on July 12th-16th 2004.
Please

We
invite delegates to submit abstracts for presentation in workshops. The workshop chairs
will select submissions for presentation in the parallel sessions. In the case of
oversubscription, selected delegates will have the opportunity to present their work in
poster format during dedicated evening sessions of the conference. The deadline for
abstract submission is 30th April 2004.
We ask colleagues to submit their abstracts via the web upload form on the abstracts submission page.
Alternatively,
abstracts (of not more than 300 words and set in plain LaTex), should be submitted by
e-mail to both the LOC (abstracts_AT_gr17.com) and the relevant workshop
chair. When sending abstracts by e-mail, please insert the workshop number (e.g. A.3 or
C.1(iii)) and nothing else in the subject line of the message.
Abstracts
may also be submitted in hard copy (300 words or less, 3 copies typed or printed on A4
paper) to the GR17 secretarial office (address below).
Registration will open in December 2003. Registration details will be available soon on the Registration and Accommodation page of the conference website.
Registration
fees
A
standard registration fee of Euro375 will apply. There will be reductions for members of
the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation (ISGRG) and for student
delegates. (E=Euro)

Delegates
will have the opportunity to book accommodation through the Registration and Accommodation
webpage. Accommodation will be available at every level. Rates indicated are per night.
Dormitory accommodation in a back-packer hostel starts at E15, budget hotels from E25.
These would typically be in the city centre, about 15 minutes by bus from the conference
centre. 3-star - 5-star hotel accommodation will be available within walking distance of
the conference centre. 3-star starts at E50 per person sharing; allow up to E250 for
5-star. There will also be campus accommodation available in Trinity College and in
University College Dublin. Prices are in the range E40-E65 depending on location and
sharing arrangements.
Aer
Lingus is the official carrier for the conference. Details will be provided on the
conference website in due course.
Limited
financial support will be available to fund the participation costs of delegates from
developing countries and/or countries without access to hard currency. Colleagues wishing
to apply for a participation grant should fill out the relevant section of the
registration form. See the Grants page for more information.
US
delegates should note that an application for an NSF travel grant has been submitted by
Jorge Pullin (pullin_AT_phys.lsu.edu).
To
secure IUPAP sponsorship, the organizers provide assurance that GR17 will be conducted in accordance with IUPAP principles as stated
in the ICSU-Document Universality of Science" (sixth edition, 1989) regarding
the free circulation of scientists for international purposes. In particular, no bona fide
scientist will be excluded from participation on the grounds of
national origin, nationality, or political considerations unrelated to science.
Ireland
enjoys good diplomatic relations with almost every country and very few require entry
visas. However, delegates are always advised to check with their own travel agent for more
exact details. Letters of invitation can be provided by the LOC if required (contact
details below). Delegates requesting a letter of invitation may be asked to provide
credentials of their scientific bona fides.
10. Social Programme and Tourism
The conference will open with a welcoming reception at the RDS on the evening of Sunday 18th July. Excursions are being arranged for the afternoon of Wednesday 21st July, when there will be a break in the scientific programme. A social event featuring traditional Irish music will take place later that evening.See the Social Programme page for details.
Other excursions and events are being arranged for accompanying persons during the week. Details will be available on the conference website in due course. See the Tours page for details.
The social programme will conclude on the evening of Friday 23rd July.
