When shooting documentary style footage,
it is important to also plan for visual variety. Although the above video
is only one minute and forty eight seconds in duration, it nevertheless
contains fifty-five different shots. The shots themselves vary in type
from WS (wide shot) to CU (close up), from HA (high angle) to LA (low
angle). There is also a POV (point of view) shot where a trainer and trainee
are discussing a piece of work. The camera records two mid-shots from
opposing sides, giving alternate points of view. Note the mixture of one/two/three-person
and group shots. In some scenes people are framed both for foreground
and background positioning in order to add depth. Likewise with some machinery
shots.
General audiences can find 'talking heads'
boring, unless the subject matter is of particular importance to them.
This is fine for niche audiences, but otherwise it is necessary to keep
the audience engaged, not just with the subject matter but visually. Visual
variety adds interest, which can only help your production.
