Adicolor
Adidas gave a blank canvas to a number of directors to interpret the emotive and creative possibilites of the concept of colour. Black, Blue, Green, Pink, Red, Yellow and White each were assigned a director and I think you will agree that the results are certainly diverse as well as very creative - if not weird in some cases. I choose to include two of the seven, but you can view the rest by visiting the associated site. Visit: http://www.r023g075b158.net/ It is good to see a commercial entity allowing such free interpretation and hopefully others will follow suit.

ALIAS, Project Greenlight and They Came to Attack Us, are all creations of Kyle Rankin & Efram Potelle, aka Newborn Productions Inc. Originally shown (and still are available) on the 'New England Indies' website, part of the Maine Media-Arts Project initiative. These and other movies can be downloaded as podcasts. Visit: http://memap.org/nei/ All movies show a great use of visual effects (VFX) and have a good sense of humour. All appear to be authored using the DV format, so are an inspiration to other students of digital video as to what can be done using a combination of 'amateur' equipment and enthusiasm.

Batman Dead End, which was written and directed by Sandy Collora, was produced at a cost of $30,000. You can view the 'Making of..' video by linking from the title page or click here.

Duality on the other hand is a very competent low-budget Star Wars 'fan' film developed by Mark Thomas and Dave Macomber. The integration of 3D and live action is particularly impressive. The light sabre fight scene is well choreographed (but maybe not for the squeamish!). The website details the production process, with great-looking storyboards, background information, drawings and graphics. Friends helped out with acting, costumes, makeup etc. However apart from utilising John Williams' music, they did all the production work themselves. The entire project was post-produced at home on Apple Macintosh computers.

Prey Alone, is an Irish produced action film, set in the USA "in the not too distanct future", with lots of spectacular effects included. It was shot entirely against green screen at Ardmore Studios, but post-produced at 'home'. The website provides background information, photos, storyboards and descriptions of how all the impressive special effects were accomplished. The site also describes the film as the first "digital home movie" (for Ireland) with the directors hooking up nine PCs to render all the visual effects. Both writer/directors Stephen St. Leger and James Maher had worked on numberous TV commercials before embarking on this 'cinematic' project. The film was sponsored by the Bord Scannan na hEireann, RTE and supported by the Film Action Plan Committee.
