Dublin City University - School of Communications

The B.A. in Communications (three year full-time),
has digitlal video production modules covering documentary and television
studio work. Other programmes such as the B.Sc. and the M.Sc. in Multimedia
as well as the B.A. in Journalism also offer digital video modules. All
programmes have a good academic emphasis, naturally enough from a communications
or jounalistic perspecitve. A broad range of modules are available from
broadcast studies to media analysis to cultural theory. The School of
Communications has some of the best known and highly regarded media professionals

Film Base

A support organisation for the independent film and video sector. Founded
in 1987, it countinues to provide training and resources, such as cameras,
editing facilities, lighting and support equipment. Courses are run regularly
throughout the year, from scripting, to direction, camera operations etc.
A short script award, in associaton with RTE, is also in place with cash
prizes of approximately €10,000, along with full production facilites
for successful candidates. A dedicated and enthusiastic staff helps keep
things moving. Film Base have also been officially appointed by Apple
as a Final Cut Pro Training Centre for Ireland.
Institute of Art, Design and Technology - Dun Laoghaire

IADTDL have been running film and video production courses for some time
and are considered one of the best institutions around, especially for
film training. The B.A. in Film/Video is 80% practical and 20% academic,
so has a good mix for those who like a 'hands-on' approach. There are
many other similar video/film related programmes - from make-up to prop
development to visual effects, design for film/video etc. If you can go
along to their end-of-year show, usually in early summer, do so! It is
a joy to browse all the categories of work on display.

National University of Ireland - Maynooth

Maynooth offer a three year course in Media Studies, which includes video
and television production taught over all three years. The pracitcums
are delivered by Kairos Communications, a well known radio and television
production company. Training therefore takes place in a professional studio
setting with students working in small groups to deliver complete projects.
There is also a strong academic element focusing on media analysis.

Young Irish Film Makers

YIFM is a youth training and production organisation based in Kilkenny.
Courses are run each year in Kilkenny, where students work in teams producing
short video based projects. Some film work has been shown on RTE and at
the Junior Dublin Film Festival. If you are aged between eight and eighteen
then this is worth checking out.
