Pathways to Work – Sharing Older Adult Voices
Pathways to Work 2021–2025 is Ireland’s national employment strategy, aiming to reduce unemployment and strengthen access to work, especially for disadvantaged groups. As Ireland’s population ages, it is important to recognise that many older adults want to continue working or contributing, and their voices need to be heard.
To support the Department of Social Protection’s public consultation, DCU Age Friendly University (AFU) gathered insights from our AFU participants and older learners (50+), sharing their experiences, motivations, and challenges related to their work.
💬 A strong message came through: older adults want to stay engaged in meaningful activity, motivated by social connection, fulfilment, and financial security. However, barriers persist, ranging from age bias in recruitment to inflexible work arrangements and the challenge of keeping digital skills up to date.
These reflections, along with broader European evidence, underline that creating age-friendly pathways to work is not just about legislation; it is about workplace culture, flexibility, and fair opportunities.
📑 We have submitted our findings to the Department of Social Protection as part of the Pathways to Work consultation. You can read the full insights here.
A huge thank you to all AFU participants who shared their perspectives. Your voices are helping shape the future of Ireland’s labour market.
