DCU Anti-Bullying Centre World Café on Belonging at School

DCU Anti-Bullying Centre hosts a World Café on Belonging at School to mark Anti-Bullying Week 2025.

The DCU Anti-Bullying Centre hosted a collaborative and energising World Café on Belonging at School on Thursday, 13th November, at the All Hallows Campus as part of Anti-Bullying Week 2025. The event brought together teachers, students, ABC researchers, and external stakeholders to reflect on how schools can better nurture belonging, inclusion, and positive relationships.

Using the World Café format, participants engaged in themed discussions across three key areas: Exploring Belonging, Positive School Climate, and Inclusive Schools.

At the Exploring Belonging tables, attendees considered the question: “What makes people feel they belong at school?” Conversations highlighted the importance of supportive friendships, trusted adults, inclusive teaching practices, and opportunities for students to feel seen, heard, and valued.

The Positive School Climate tables focused on the question: “What are some examples of things your school does well to make students feel welcome and supported?” Participants shared examples such as peer mentoring, student-led initiatives, transition supports from primary to post-primary and for new students in the school, themed weeks such as culture week and Pride Week, and whole-school activities that create a sense of community and connection. A school dog, called Chase, even got a mention!

The Inclusive Schools theme encouraged participants to explore how schools can ensure that all students, regardless of background, identity, or ability should experience fairness, and respect. Discussions touched on policies, representation in school spaces, and proactive approaches to addressing barriers faced by minority or marginalised groups.

Throughout the event, ABC researchers and external stakeholders facilitated the tables,  supporting students in capturing insights that will inform ongoing research and National policy aimed at strengthening belonging at school.

The DCU Anti-Bullying Centre extends its sincere thanks to the Department of Education and Youth, whose support through the Cinéaltas Action Plan on Bullying made the event possible. Special appreciation is also extended to the teachers and students from St Louis High School, Rathmines, St Aidan’s CBS, and Blakestown Community School, whose contributions enriched the discussions and brought vital student perspectives to the forefront.

The reflections and ideas gathered during the World Café will continue to guide the Centre’s work in promoting safer, more inclusive school environments where every student feels they truly belong. A World Cafe on Belonging at School will be published shortly.
