Centre Researchers Addresses Oireachtas Committee on Children’s Online Safety

Prof. James O’Higgins Norman, UNESCO Chair on Bullying and Cyberbullying, and Dr. Darragh McCashin, Chair of the Observatory on Cyberbullying, Cyberhate and Online Harassment, recently appeared before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Equality to contribute to discussions on technology, social media and children. Their evidence-based submission focused on the safety and wellbeing of children and young people online, highlighting issues such as cyberbullying, gendered harms, emerging risks linked to artificial intelligence, and the importance of platform accountability, safety-by-design and education. The presentation emphasised a rights-based, research-informed approach that balances safety with participation and meaningful youth voice.
