This group works to close the research-to-policy gap by fostering inclusive, evidence-based dialogue between academics, government officials, industry leaders and community stakeholders. Without this dialogue, government policies can become fragmented and outdated and fail to reflect the realities and needs of communities. The outcome of this is the creation of smarter, more inclusive, and responsive policies that drive sustainable and community driven local development.

This Special Interest Group closes the research-to-policy gap by developing effective strategies for translating research into policy, engaging stakeholders, and co-producing solutions that deliver real-world impact. Specifically, the Group creates opportunities for the exchange of innovative research, ideas and practices through seminars, workshops, publications - both nationally and internationally. Recent areas of focus have important national issues such as digital towns, the cost of a United Ireland, and Ireland’s national risk policy. Our work contributes to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth; Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

Research Themes

  • Business - Policy Interface. How businesses both shape and are shaped by local policy. Our research includes a particular focus on town regeneration, such as through the Town Centre First Policy, and the role of business in local economic revitalisation
  • Local Governance and Policy Innovation. How local governments can design and implement adaptive, inclusive, and evidence-based policies in areas such as digitalisation, risk management, housing, and public services
  • Inclusive Economic Development. Policies that support fair and equitable economic growth, particularly in rural communities. This includes employment, skills development and support for local enterprises and entrepreneurship
