The Risk & Crisis Management (R4I) Special Interest Group focuses on understanding and mitigating societal and sustainability-related risks, including climate change impacts. The group also researches how communities, including governments and businesses, can respond to these and other emergencies. The group impacts business and society by providing research-informed methodologies and frameworks for national-level risk assessment and emergency management. This approach not only strengthens Ireland's public safety but also contributes to wider European resilience, aligning with the EU's Disaster Resilience Goals, OECD risk reduction, and NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme. The group’s research has been presented to national and international bodies, including the OECD - High-Level Risk Forum in Geneva and the Government Task Force on Emergency Planning. This work aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) 11: Building Resilient & Sustainable Communities.
Research Themes
- Disaster Risk Reduction. Our projects address disaster risk, such as developing a user-centric weather forecast and warning system for Ireland, and the influence of expertise on perceived and actual household disaster preparedness
- Building Resilient Organisations and Communities. Our research explores how to build resilience through effective business continuity management. It also includes work on household emergency preparedness, fire safety protection, and how industrial incidents affect stock market volatility
- Emergency Management. This theme covers various aspects of emergency management, including research on the frontline response to COVID-19 in Ireland and defining core competencies for emergency management practitioners.
