Academic biography
Professor P.J. Byrne is Professor of Operations Management and the current Deputy Dean at Dublin City University Business School. He previously served as Head of the Financial and Operational Performance Group from 2021 – 2025, and as Head of the Management Group from 2012 – 2015.
Prior to joining DCU, Prof. Byrne worked at the Enterprise Research Centre, University of Limerick from 2004 – 2007. He has led the development of multiple academic programmes, including DCU’s BSc in Aviation Management (with pilot studies) in 2008 and the MSc in Aviation Leadership in 2014. More recently, he was the lead developer of the MSc in Management (Operations and Supply Chain Management) in 2024 and the Graduate Certificate in Management (Operations and Supply Chain Management), in partnership with Drogheda Institute of Further Education (DIFE), in 2025.
Prof. Byrne has served on numerous external programme accreditation panels across Irish higher education institutions and has acted as an external examiner for academic programmes at a number of Irish based institutes. He also held an external examiner role at City University, Hong Kong from January 2015 – January 2019.
He has an extensive track record in industry-focused research. He has acted as Principal Investigator for several national and international research projects and, together with his research team, has successfully attracted significant funding, primarily in the areas of discrete event simulation and its applications in manufacturing, services, and healthcare process improvement.
His research interests include supply chain design, analysis and optimisation, discrete event simulation, industrial applications of simulation modelling for the manufacturing and services sectors, and business process optimisation.
In addition to his academic roles, Prof. Byrne is highly active in the European and Irish operations management community. He served as President of the European Decision Sciences Institute from 2023 – 2024 and as Immediate Past President from 2024 – 2025, having previously held the role of Treasurer from 2020 – 2022. He was also Conference Chairperson for the European Decision Sciences Conference 2022, held in Dublin. He is also a founding member and board member of the Dublin Lean Network (2019 – Present).
