Analytical Method Development

Our research is based on the use and development of a range of analytical techniques from separations to sensors.

Typical projects will include development of novel materials for extraction and enrichment of analytes and development of novel separation systems. The materials which we develop include novel materials based on molecular imprintingtechniques or development of co- and plasticised polymers for sensors. These materials are effective in matrix clean-up, enrichment and selective extraction of analytes.

The methods developed are applied to a range of applications from environmental (e.g. industrial waste streams, sewage treatment waste effluent and environmental waters ) to biological samples.

 

Current projects include:

  • Development of chromo-ionophore-based optical sensors for metal ion determination.
  • Development of smart materials for use in infrared optical sensing systems for industrial solvents in waste streams.
  • Development of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for analyte enrichment and extraction.
  • Development of extraction / enrichment / separation methods for the determination of endocrine disrupting chemicals e.g. oestrogens and alkylphenols
  • Development of extraction / enrichment / separation methods for the determination of chemotherapeutic agents
  • Development of capillary electrophoretic methods for a variety of applications
  • Optical sensing systems for environmental analysis including applications in the marine environment
  • Determination of trace elements in foodstuff and development of novel therapeutic agents based on these
