"Democracy and climate in troubled times" by Prof. Rebecca Willis
Prof. Rebecca Willis
The Institute for Climate and Society will be hosting a seminar presentation by Prof. Rebecca Willis of Lancaster University next Wednesday, 5 November at 1:30pm in GLA.C206, the Moot Court Room.
The title of Prof. Willis's talk is "Democracy and climate in troubled times". People’s trust in government and democratic processes is low, and yet the need for urgent action on climate has never been greater. What does this mean for climate governance? In her talk, Prof. Willis will present findings from her research with citizens, and with politicians, showing that there is more common ground than many think, but that we have the urgent task of putting citizens front and centre of climate strategies.
Prof. Rebecca Willis leads the Climate Citizens research group at Lancaster University, which examines the role of public engagement in energy and climate governance. She holds a UKRI Fellowship, and is a Co-Investigator of the Energy Demand Research Centre and JUST – the Centre for Joined-up Sustainability Transitions.
She is an Expert Adviser to the UK Climate Change Committee, which advises the UK Parliament and Government. She advises Innovate UK’s Net Zero Living Initiative and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA). Previously, she was an Expert Lead to Climate Assembly UK, the first national Citizens' Assembly on Climate Change, established by six parliamentary select committees in the House of Commons.
