What I enjoy most about teaching on the BSc in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is getting to work with students who are genuinely curious and excited to learn. By the time they reach their final year, I see how much they’ve grown in confidence and independence, and their projects often surprise me with new ideas I hadn’t thought of myself. As they learn and develop, I find myself learning alongside them. Their creativity and questions always encourage me to see things in a new way.

I always aim to create a space where students feel comfortable asking questions and trying out new ideas, even if they’re not sure of the answers yet. You don’t have to be a maths expert or a programmer to do well here. What really matters is being curious and willing to look for answers in the data. This course is set up to support that curiosity, with a mix of maths, hands-on work, and real-world examples to help you grow.

Preparing students for what comes next
For me, helping students get ready for life after DCU is about much more than just teaching technical skills. Throughout the course, you’ll build up your critical thinking, creativity, and time management, which are so important in today’s world. From 2026/2027, the degree will also include skills like communication, teamwork, collaboration and future literacy, which employers really look for.

You’ll also get to take four Application Domain modules, where you’ll see how data science and AI can make a real difference in the world. These modules don’t just show you how to build solutions, but also help you understand why your work matters in real life.

In my teaching, I like to use a flipped classroom approach. Instead of spending the whole class on slides, I share short recordings you can watch in your own time. This means we can use class time for deeper discussions, practical demos, and tackling tougher ideas together. For group projects, I encourage students to come up with their own ideas, review each other’s work, and give feedback. This way, you learn how to give and receive feedback and make good decisions about your work, which are really useful skills both in college and in your future career.

Graduates from this course are ready for lots of different careers. Data science and AI skills are needed everywhere, from industry and research to government and private companies. Many of our graduates go on to work in data analytics, machine learning, AI, software development, and digital transformation. The INTRA placement is a great chance to build your professional network and get real experience before you finish your degree.

Talk to students who are here now or who have finished, check out LinkedIn, browse the DCU website, and have a look at some final-year projects. These chats and searches will give you a real feel for what the course is like and help you see if it matches what excites you.
