'I am interested in the contribution that translation and interpreting can make to society, and I try to bring that societal focus to everything that I teach and research.'

My name is Patrick Cadwell, and I am a lecturer on this programme.

I have always been interested in languages, but Japanese is my main interest because I worked in Tokyo for nearly nine years.

I teach subjects related to translation studies, terminology, and specialised translation from Japanese to English.

I am interested in the contribution that translation and interpreting can make to society, and I try to bring that societal focus to everything that I teach and research.

Recently, my research has focused on the roles that translation can play in people’s experiences of crisis events such as earthquakes and pandemics. It may seem depressing, but I find it hopeful because I see the positive impact that translation can have at these times. I want to share these positive stories with you!
