'The highlight of my programme was the mock news days. At the time I had no idea how similar they would be to an actual newsroom.'

Why did you choose this particular course?

I chose this course as I always had an interest in politics, english and digital media. I knew I wanted to enter into a creative field where every day felt different and exciting. DCU’s journalism programme had a great reputation and many of their alumni have gone on to be excellent and well known journalists.

What aspects of this programme were most useful or valuable to you?

The programme included so many practical workshops where I gained the necessary hands on experience to enter into the industry. In my career, I have used many of the valuable software, equipment and technical skills that I learnt throughout my time in the course.

What were your highlights of the programme?

The highlight of my programme was the mock news days. At the time I had no idea how similar they would be to an actual newsroom. They gave me the opportunity to explore different roles within the newsroom and practise filing for tight deadlines.

Did the programme create opportunities for you?

Not only did the course provide an internship at the end of final year, but I interviewed for and was awarded the Veronica Guerin Scholarship which allowed me to work in a newsroom in Washington DC. I can’t put into words how amazing this experience was and how valuable it has been in my career so far.
