'For me, the most valuable aspect of the programme was the flexibility to choose modules and research topics that were of interest to me.'

Why did you choose this particular course?

When I left school 15 years ago, I embarked on a third level course, realising shortly after that wasn't for me. Like many, I dropped out early, unsure of my career path. I left college to develop my professional skills working in an SME. I always knew I had an interest in international security and politics and, during the pandemic, I made the decision to return to full time education studying International Relations as a mature student to pursue a career in this area.

What aspects of this programme were most useful or valuable to you?

For me, the most valuable aspect of the programme was the flexibility to choose modules and research topics that were of interest to me. I was particularly interested in the Post Soviet security landscape and conflict in the Middle East and North Africa. Students were encouraged and supported to engage and debate complex issues. Secondly, my third year Internship at the Central Bank of Ireland as a security risk analyst provided me with a unique opportunity to develop my skills in security risk management and policy development and was an opportunity that would not have been available to me without attending university.

What were your highlights of the programme?

Returning to college as a 29-year-old was a daunting experience. My mind was quickly put at ease when I saw the support that was available to me, the friendly and supportive lecturers and the friendships that I cultivated with people of all ages and backgrounds. I have no doubt that this collaborative environment was responsible for fostering my interest and success throughout the years.

Did the programme create opportunities for you?

I started my degree with a vague notion of career progression in a security related field. I am currently working in policy and administration with a wonderful company and am in the final stages of recruitment for An Garda Siochana. My degree will be an asset to me when I apply for security and defence related roles in the future. Thank you all at DCU for an amazing four years.
