'A major strength of the programme was the opportunity to study literature from a wide range of perspectives, spanning classical works to contemporary media. '

Why did you choose this particular course?

I chose the English and Media Studies course due to my longstanding passion for reading and storytelling. Books played a central role in shaping my upbringing, and I sought a programme that would allow me to explore this interest in depth. Dublin City University appealed to me because of its balanced approach between literature and media, offering the opportunity to critically analyse texts while also acquiring practical skills relevant to careers in publishing and the creative industries.

What aspects of this programme were most useful or valuable to you?

A major strength of the programme was the opportunity to study literature from a wide range of perspectives, spanning classical works to contemporary media. I particularly appreciated the encouragement of open discussion, where diverse viewpoints sparked conversation and deepened my own understanding. Additionally, working closely with passionate lecturers, such as Michael Hinds, was rewarding; their guidance and enthusiasm made the programme both intellectually stimulating and entertaining.

What were your highlights of the programme?

Among the most memorable aspects of the programme was the opportunity to collaborate with peers who shared similar interests. Beyond this, a particular highlight was researching and writing my dissertation on adolescent identity in Irish Young Adult Literature, which was subsequently selected for publication. This experience not only reflected the progress I had made academically but also instilled in me the confidence to continue pursuing my research interests.

Did the programme create opportunities for you?

The programme encouraged me to gain professional experience in publishing and media, which has been instrumental in shaping my career aspirations. Through internships, mentorships, and my involvement with the Society of Young Publishers and Aventu, I applied theoretical knowledge in practical contexts, including copyediting, content creation, and audience engagement. These experiences have inspired me to pursue a career in publishing, with the ultimate goal of creating novels that resonate with readers as profoundly as the books of my childhood shaped me.
