Undergraduate Course FAQs

What is an undergraduate degree?

An undergraduate degree is a foundational post-secondary degree that serves as the gateway to higher education. Students can use undergraduate courses to learn new skills for either a career or further studies, such as a postgraduate degree.

Do you need A-levels to be an undergraduate?

You do not need A-levels to be an undergraduate at DCU. While they are accepted for UK/Northern Irish applicants (typically requiring at least 2 or 3 A-Levels at grade C or higher), DCU accepts several other qualifications including the Irish Leaving Certificate, IB Diploma, or QQI FET (PLC) awards.

Key Entry Route Information:

  • A-Level Requirements: Generally, 6 distinct subjects are required, including at least 2 or 3 A-Levels (Grade C+) and 4 or 3 other subjects (usually GCSEs) that must include English, Mathematics, and another language.
  • Alternative Qualifications: QQI FET Level 5/6 awards can be used for entry to many courses. DCU also offers a national access entry route through HEAR.
  • Mature Students: Applicants over 23 may not need standard academic requirements and are assessed on life/work experience.
  • International Students: Other qualifications are considered for direct entry or via an international foundation year.
  • For specific courses, you must meet both general entry requirements and specific subject requirements (e.g., a specific grade in Maths or a science subject).

What level is undergraduate in Ireland?

Undergraduate courses in Ireland can fall under a few different levels of qualification under the Irish National Framework of Qualifications which helps to categorise educational awards. All undergraduate degrees at DCU are Level 8 Honours degrees. We do not offer Level 7 degrees.

How many years is an undergraduate degree?

An undergraduate degree can take anywhere between 3 to 4 years depending on which program you are doing.
