International Postgraduate Conference in Translation and Interpreting 2026

The Centre for Translation and Textual Studies (CTTS) in collaboration with the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS), Dublin City University (DCU) is hosting the 19th International Postgraduate Conference in Translation and Interpreting (IPCITI 2026) on 3-4 December 2026. 

The theme of this year’s conference is:

Across Academia and Industry: (In)Visibility and Interdisciplinarity in Translation and Interpreting

However, an important question remains: is this interdisciplinarity truly reciprocal?

While translation and interpreting studies frequently borrow concepts, frameworks, and methodologies from neighbouring disciplines, the extent to which translation and interpreting research itself influences those disciplines remains less clear. Is translation and interpreting studies sufficiently visible beyond its own disciplinary boundaries? To what extent are scholars in other fields engaging with concepts developed within translation and interpreting studies? How are translation and interpreting researchers and practitioners positioned within broader academic, institutional, and professional landscapes?

At the same time, contemporary developments in technology, global communication, multilingualism, and migration, continue to reshape translation and interpreting practices. These developments also raise questions regarding the relationship between academia and industry. Is there an increasing gap between research and professional practice? How do practitioners engage with academic knowledge production, and how does industry shape research agendas? What forms of collaboration, tension, or mutual (in)visibility exist between the two spheres?

The 19th International Postgraduate Conference in Translation and Interpreting (IPCITI 2026), hosted by the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University, invites postgraduate students and early-career researchers working in translation and interpreting studies, as well as scholars and practitioners from related disciplines engaging with translation and interpreting, to submit proposals addressing these issues and related themes.

IPCITI 2026 aims to provide an inclusive and stimulating platform for emerging scholars to discuss current developments, methodological innovations, interdisciplinary perspectives, and professional challenges in translation and interpreting studies. We welcome theoretical, empirical, methodological, practice-based, and interdisciplinary contributions under the following topics:

• Interdisciplinary engagement with translation and interpreting studies (e.g. Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Cultural Studies, Sociology and Anthropology)
• Interdisciplinarity and knowledge exchange in translation and interpreting studies (e.g. Communication Studies, Information Science, Higher Education Studies)
• Visibility and invisibility of translation and interpreting research (e.g. Sociology of Knowledge, Media Studies)
• Translation and interpreting across academia, institutions and industry (e.g. International Relations, Public Policy)
• Translation and interpreting technologies and digital practices (Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Natural Language Processing (NLP))
• Translator and interpreter training and pedagogy (e.g. Curriculum Design, Cognitive Psychology, Applied Linguistics)
• Community and public service interpreting (e.g. Medical Humanities, Social Work)
• Specialised translation (e.g. terminology, literary translation, audiovisual translation, localisation) 
• Professional identities, ethics, and labour conditions (e.g. Professional Ethics, Labour Economics, Human Resource Management)
• Translation, migration, multilingualism, human rights, and social justice (e.g. Human Rights Law, Migration Studies, Political Philosophy)
• Critical approaches to translation studies (e.g. Decolonisation of Translation and Interpreting Studies, Postcolonial Theory, Gender Studies, Critical Discourse Analysis, Deconstruction)
• Innovative, creative and interdisciplinary research methodologies in translation and interpreting studies (e.g. Digital Humanities, Corpus Linguistics, Ethnography, Mixed Methods Research)
• Translation and interpreting in crisis and conflict settings (e.g. Peace and Conflict Studies, Disaster Management, Risk and Crisis Communication)

The conference will be in-person, but online presentations will be considered.
