Compiled Notations Exhibition

Artist Statement:

Marking a surface, as a system of communication, has lost little of its relevance today; the means may be more varied, but the essence of the act remains fundamentally unchanged. My work is a continuation and a disruption of this process. I collaborate with communities, organisations, and businesses, examining the history of mark making in the context of drawn, written and programmed language. Using present-day and historical data as research material, I investigate modes of inscription, replication and transmission. 

A central element in my practice is the repurposing of obsolete office copying materials: carbon paper and typewriter film. These materials have enabled me to develop a language of drawing from which a series of successive techniques has emerged. Currently, I am re-employing an early office stencil and ink print technology called Mimeograph* to make fine art prints and book art. 

*The stencil duplicator or mimeograph machine (1890 - 1970) was the first truly egalitarian print medium, a small-scale, low-cost form of duplication used initially by small businesses, then by political activists, artists and writers for the production of alternative printed publications.
