From a Lockdown Lifeline to a Thriving Literary Community DCU Book Club celebrates it 35th gathering
Born out of a need to stay connected during the isolation of the Covid-19 pandemic, the DCU Book Club started as a space for staff to share their love of reading and reflection. What began as a virtual lifeline has since evolved into a thriving university-wide community that now brings together both staff and students in a shared celebration of books, ideas, and conversation.
Developed by the DCU Cultural Arts Office, in partnership with DCU Library, the Book Club has grown from strength to strength, welcoming some of Ireland’s most celebrated and emerging writers. Past guests have included Anne Enright, Sebastian Barry, Colm Toibín, Donal Ryan as well as emerging writers Sarah Gilmartin, Aingela Flannery, Ferdia Lennon, J P McHugh and among others — each bringing unique insight into the craft of writing and the art of storytelling.
As a university-based book club, it offers something particularly special: a warm and welcoming space where readers can gather to explore themes of literature and creativity, to discuss craft, story, and character, and to reflect on how books shape the way we see ourselves and our world.
Speaking about the milestone, Marcella Bannon DCU Cultural Arts Officer said:
“The DCU Book Club has become one of the University’s most vibrant cultural communities. It’s a space where staff and students come together as readers — to slow down, to think, and to share ideas. Reaching our 35th book is a testament to the enthusiasm, generosity, and curiosity of everyone who takes part.”
The Book Club continues to meet regularly throughout the academic semester, offering participants the opportunity to engage with both contemporary Irish writing and global literary voices. All staff, students and members of the DCU community are welcome to join. Next Book Club details can be found on our website.
