DCU partners with IFI Documentary Festival 2025 to screen striking student short docs

Emerging filmmakers are postgraduate students from the MA in Documentary Practice course

DCU’s School of Communications  has joined forces with the Irish Film Institute (IFI) to host a screening of seven short documentaries made by students on the postgraduate course MA in Documentary Practice as part of the IFI Dublin Documentary Festival 2025.  Tickets are available on the IFI website

The MA in Documentary Practice builds on 30 years of experience in teaching film and television in the School of Communications, and responds to growing student interest in (and industry demand for) documentaries. The unique appeal of the programme lies in its multidisciplinary approach to non-fictional storytelling - students complete full production modules in photography, audio production and video production. You can find out more information about the course here.

This year, for the first time, their dissertation work will be shown on the big screen. The subjects chosen by the international group - with students from across Ireland represented, alongside Andorra, Nepal, Belgium, Germany and Italy - cover a wide range of topics, from Dalkey ferrymen to the making live music for MarioCart, and what wig to wear washing up.

Dr Tom Burke, programme chair of the postgraduate course, spoke about the importance of showcasing emerging work at the film festival:

These films could hold their own at any international short-docs festival, and it will be thrilling to see them on the big screen in the IFI. At DCU, we’re very proud of the range of styles and stories that will be told - the MA in Documentary Film Practice gives students the space to follow their own interests, and the resulting mix of Irish and international stories were shot by students solely with the big screen in mind - a fitting culmination of their hard work throughout the programme.
