DCU Art Collection welcomes new donation by Artist Eddie Kennedy
Titled Soar, the large-scale oil painting captures the energy and movement of the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Ireland, near Ballycastle. Rich in colour and atmosphere, the work reflects Kennedy’s distinctive approach to painting - combining technical skill with a deeply felt response to landscape and place.
Kennedy is widely recognised as one of Ireland’s leading contemporary painters, particularly known for his seascapes and coastal scenes. He is represented by Hillsboro Fine Art Gallery and is a member of Aosdána, recognising his significant contribution to the arts in Ireland. His work is held in numerous public and private collections, and he has exhibited extensively in the US, UK and across Europe, leading to a strong international base of collectors.
Speaking about the donation, DCU Cultural Arts Officer Marcella Bannon said:
“Art plays an important role in everyday life on campus. Works from the collection are integrated across our buildings and shared spaces, creating opportunities for students, staff and visitors to encounter and engage with art in a meaningful way. Generous donations like this help us to build a collection over time that reflects both artistic excellence and a strong sense of cultural legacy.”
The donation also reflects Kennedy’s longstanding relationship with the University, particularly its St Patrick’s Campus.
Eddie Kennedy said:
“I’ve had a long-standing relationship with DCU, particularly St Patrick’s Campus, over many years, and I’m very pleased to be in a position to add to its growing collection. At this stage in my career, it means a lot to contribute a work that will live on campus, something that students and staff can engage with and enjoy into the future.”
The addition of this new acquisition reflects DCU’s ongoing commitment to supporting artists and embedding arts and culture across university life, while continuing to build a collection for future generations.
Eddie Kennedy will be exhibiting in Hillsboro Fine Art Gallery from April 17 - May 30 2026. See the Hillsboro Fine Art Gallery website for more details visit the Hillsboro Fine Art Gallery website.
