'Colourings' exhibition by Lucy Hill from DCU School of Arts Education and Movement

Curated by Helen O’Donoghue, a Draíocht Children’s Commission, part of a series of initiatives to mark Draíocht’s 25th birthday.

Colourings centres on the Lucy Hill's own abstract colourings, which she has reimagined through collaboration with fashion designer Orla Langan and sound designer Adam Kennedy.

Orla and Lucy have transformed the visual language of Lucy's sketchbook colourings into soft sculptures that invite children to touch, playfully interact, to take comfort and rest. Adam has crafted a bespoke soundscape and sonic sensors that respond to their movement, creating an auditory environment that echoes the sculptures. The artist invites children to play with/in her colourings in the gallery, to recompose them as they wish and to enjoy their distinct qualities and possible combinations.

It invites us to consider colouring as a creative act rooted in childhood artistry.

Lucy Hill is an Assistant Professor of Visual Art Education at the School of Arts Education and Movement in DCU. She is a visual artist with a particular interest in artmaking in childhood. She was the inaugural Professor John Coolahan early years artist in residence at The Ark Cultural Centre for Children in Dublin, in 2018-19. She has exhibited her work widely in solo and selected group exhibitions, as well as creating four local authority public sculpture commissions. She was awarded her PhD in art education from NCAD when she was a Research Ireland postgraduate scholar. Her academic writing has been published by Sage, Routledge and Intellect Books. Her book ‘Everyday Artfulness’ was published by Peter Lang in 2024.
