Getting Ready for the Marketplace
With
Muireann Ní Dhuigneain, Head, Careers Service along with the Careers
Team.
A very practical session, to explore the options you have available
to you as a graduate. The focus will be primarily on how you can
prepare yourself for the current market place, access job and
postgraduate opportunities, construct a superb CV, and in general
position yourself for success. You will be introduced to powerful
questions to help you answer that question 'what to do next'. There
will be lots of hints and tips to help you reflect and follow up by
personalising your plan of action.
Start Your Own
Business
With Prof. Colm O’Gorman
Starting a business may not seem like an obvious choice for many
students. You might argue that you don't have much work or business
experience, that you don't have savings or 'creditworthiness' with a
bank, that you don't know 'how to' start a business, and that 2009
is a bad time to try to start a business. Yet many thousands of
businesses are started every year, and a significant minority is
started by 'young' people. Furthermore, I have estimated that by
2020 as many as one in every five DCU graduates from
2009 will have either started a business or be actively trying to
start a business. In this workshop we will answer three questions: (i)
Do you have what it takes to start a business? (ii) How do people
like you start businesses? and (iii) What should you do next if you
are interested in starting a business now or in the future?

options for volunteer work in Ireland or abroad along with the
numerous benefits they offer on both a personal and a professional
level.

Message from Áras an Uachtaráin*
With Dr. Martin McAleese
Dr Martin McAleese has had an
intriguing career. He qualified from Queen’s with a B.Sc. in
Physics, went on to train and subsequently work as an accountant.
He then decided to become a dentist and ran a very successful
general practice.
When his wife was
elected as President of Ireland in 1997, Martin wholeheartedly
devoted himself to support his wife’s work of bridge-building
between all communities on the island. In the early years of the
McAleese Presidency, Martin also undertook voluntary projects
overseas where he has utilised his dental training for the benefit
of poor communities.
Since then, Martin has sought to develop greater trust and
reconciliation among communities in Northern Ireland. Again, in
support of the President’s visits to communities both at home and
abroad, Martin is hugely helpful in this outreach work and together
President McAleese and he are a formidable team.
Martin will share his insights into making the most of your future.
