DCU Claim SSI Division 2 Rugby Title After Late Farrell Drop Goal

Student Sport Ireland Rugby Mens Division 2 Final
Dublin City University ‘B’ 27 v TUS Midwest 22

A dramatic drop goal from Darragh Farrell with just three minutes on the clock sealed a memorable SSI Division 2 Final victory for Dublin City University, as they overcame a physically dominant TUS Midwest on Wednesday, 3rd of December. The win not only crowned a remarkable performance but also marked a milestone — DCU’s first-ever Division 2 title, two years after triumphing in Division 3. The contest opened at a furious pace, with both sides displaying their contrasting styles. Despite DCU’s early attacking flair, TUS struck first from a well-executed set play off a scrum 10 metres out. Their centre burst through the line before offloading for a try that reflected their power and precision. DCU’s response was swift. An impressive counter from Harry Edwards created space on the left flank, and winger Sennan Campbell showcased his craft and finishing ability to cross the line. Farrell added the conversion, giving DCU a narrow 7–5 advantage.
Momentum swung back and forth throughout the opening half. A powerful TUS maul restored their lead before Alex Reynolds outpaced the defence after impressive work from Dan McElroy, to nudge DCU ahead again. Unfortunately, his try came at a cost — a hamstring injury forced his substitution, with Zac Doyle O’Brien coming on to maintain DCU’s pace out wide. Moments later, player of the match Max Doyle, after claiming the restart, sliced through the TUS line before feeding Kevin Healy, who raced 50 metres to score under the posts. Farrell’s conversion extended the lead to 17–10. TUS, however, had the final say of the half, mauling over once more to trail by just two points at the break (17–15).
The second half followed the same unpredictable rhythm. On 65 minutes, Doyle O’Brien capped an impressive replacement performance with a converted try, pushing DCU further ahead. But indiscipline and fatigue crept in, and TUS capitalised with another maul-driven score five minutes from time, closing the gap to 24–22. As the final minutes ticked away, the game hung in the balance. DCU needed a moment of composure — and Farrell delivered. Receiving a crisp pass from Jamie Tallon, he stepped into the pocket and coolly struck the drop goal that extended the lead to five. TUS pressed hard in the dying moments, but DCU’s defence, marshalled by captain Abul Hasan Sheik Madhar Ali and supported by locks Micheal Hayes and Daire McDonnell, held firm. The decisive turnover penalty from substitute prop Tom Byrne finally settled the
contest and sparked celebrations among the DCU camp.
