Ireland Makes History with DCU Athletes in Action
Dublin City University was proudly represented at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships by students and alumni on the Irish team.
The 31st edition of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships took place on 14 December 2025 in Lagoa, Portugal, along the scenic course at Parque Urbano do Parchal. The event featured races across multiple age categories,U20, U23, and senior for both men and women, along with a mixed relay.
Tom Breslin of Clonliffe Harriers and current first year student finished 67th place in the U20 Men's race.
Amy Greene of Finn Valley AC ran fantastically to finish 20th in the Women's U23 race, with Roise Roberts of Candour Track Club also competing with a 34th place finish.
The men’s senior team delivered an outstanding collective effort to claim the team silver medal at the European Cross Country Championships—marking Ireland’s first men’s medal at these championships in 25 years. Their success was anchored by brilliant performances from DCU alumni Brian Fay, who finished 10th, and Cormac Dalton, close behind in 11th. Both athletes showcased resilience and tactical strength on the challenging Lagoa course, playing a pivotal role in securing Ireland’s place on the podium.
Alumni Andrew Coscoran finished the final leg of the senior mixed relay team, bringing them home in 6th place.
Joe Ryan, DCU’s Head of Athletics, coached Cormac Dalton and was team manager for the U20 squad at the championships. Well done to Joe on his continued support for DCU athletes and his continued involvement with Irish squads.
