DCU win Brendan Johnston opener

DCU 34 : 27 TUS Midlands

Dublin City University opened their Student Sport Ireland Brendan Johnston Cup campaign
with a hard-fought 34–27 victory over TUS Midlands in Round One, emerging on top after
an absorbing contest played in increasingly difficult conditions.
The game began in steady rain, but both sides showed real ambition to move the ball and
keep the tempo high. DCU settled quickest, with fullback Shaun O’Reilly heavily involved
from the outset. The opening try came after some fluid inter-passing between backs and
forwards, O’Reilly hitting the line at pace to finish a sweeping movement and get DCU on
the board. Out-half Darragh Farrell added the conversion to underline his control of
proceedings early on.
DCU’s second score showcased cohesion within the backline. From a well-structured phase
attack, Farrell combined with Cal Corcoran and centre Aaron McAteer, who released
wing Michael Cremin into space. Cremin finished smartly in the corner, capping a textbook
example of decision-making and support play out wide.
At the heart of DCU’s control was Farrell, who steered the game superbly, kicking to the
corners when required and varying the point of attack. In the tight five, lock Oran Clinton and
backrows Aaron Miller and Diarmuid Long provided the grunt that allowed the backs to play,
repeatedly carrying into heavy traffic and securing clean ball in the contact area. In the back
row, Robin Hamill was prominent both sides of the ball, offering work-rate and physicality
around the fringes.
TUS Midlands, for their part, were far from passengers in the contest. They enjoyed bright
passages of play throughout the half and were particularly dangerous from their lineout. Their
hooker crossed from a well-organised peel at the front, keeping the visitors firmly in the
game.
DCU’s response was impressively composed. Centre Aaron McAteer produced one of the
moments of the match with a barnstorming finish, carrying two defenders over the line to
restore DCU’s scoreboard buffer. TUS replied with a quick tap forwards try.
Adding Farrell’s three conversion, DCU went into half-time with a 26–12 lead, reflecting
their edge in territory, control and clinical finishing.
The second half began under much heavier rain, turning the ball greasy and making handling
increasingly challenging. The quality of the contest, however, remained high. TUS Midlands
continued to threaten, firstly adding a penalty that was soon cancelled out by one from

Farrell. TUS added a further try through a mix of close-range power plays and broken-field
opportunities that narrowed the gap. Then, just before fulltime, prop Liam Granville reacted
quickly from a penalty close to the TUS line, tapping then barging and bunting his way
through would-be tacklers to touch down.
DCU’s game management under pressure was crucial in the closing stages. Farrell’s tactical
kicking and composure off the tee—finishing with three conversions and one
penalty—helped keep the scoreboard moving, while O’Reilly’s counter-attacking threat from
fullback repeatedly turned defence into attack despite the heavy conditions. Defensively,
Clinton, Hamill, Miller and Long made important interventions to repel TUS surges in the
final quarter. TUS did add another score at the front of the lineout along with a conversion to
make the final margin seven points.
Ultimately, DCU’s ability to convert chances in both halves, allied to the platform provided
by their pack and the control at 10 and 15, proved the difference in a tight, rain-soaked
encounter. The 34–27 final scoreline reflected both DCU’s attacking quality and the
resilience of a TUS Midlands side that refused to go away.
